About the Author

Elizabeth C. Mansfield is Associate Professor of art history at New York University. A scholar of modern European art and art historiography, her publications include books and articles on topics ranging from the origins of modernism to Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon to the contemporary performance and body art of Orlan. A fellow at the National Humanities Center in 2008-09, she received the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey book award in 2008 for Too Beautiful to Picture: Zeus, Myth, and Mimesis. Arnason was a distinguished art historian, educator, and museum administrator who for many years was Vice President for Art Administration of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York. I saw this book in a museum (the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA) and had the chance to peruse the museum's copy (which was of the previous edition) before buying it. After just spending 15-20 minutes with it in the museum, I became convinced that it was worth the hefty price. Now, having purchased the most recent edition, I am glad I did. It is an expensive book, but worth the price, in my opinion, as it contains a wealth of information and a wealth of art.The book was originally written by H.H. Arnason, who, as the book's Preface explains, was Professor and Chairman of the University of Minnesota's Art Department from 1947 to 1961. He also held other posts and was affiliated with the Guggenheim Museum. Since Arnason passed away some time ago, recent editions of the book have been updated by Elizabeth C. Mansfield (Associate Professor of Art at NYU), who has brought the book up to the present (as recent as 2006) with sections on globalization and postcolonial theory.Both Arnason and Mansfield are clearly intelligent scholars who place the art within its historical context to help us to see what it did, where the innovations were, and what conflicts and issues were live at that time. For example, the opening chapter deals with the legal case between Ruskin and Whistler, in which Whistler sued Ruskin for libel when Ruskin defamed Whistler's painting "Nocturne in Black and Gold." The battle was over whether Whistler could charge such a large amount of money for something that, in Ruskin's eyes, was not art. The (his)story is told in a very readable way, with the painting shown, and it is a perfect and intelligent way to open the book, since a crucial issue involved in modern art is, what makes it art and who decides?I have not had time to work my way through the whole book (it is 830 pages), but I have liked very much what I have read so far. The index is handy for finding the artists one is interested in, if you don't want to wade through the book, since the chapters are organized thematically. The book may be intended for College textbook use, but I think it is definitely interesting enough to be read by anyone interested in art and painting. It's probably a bit too large and intimidating to work well as a real "introductory" book for someone who knows nothing about art or modern art (unless you have a seriously scholarly mind), but otherwise, I think it is as accessible as it can be given its size and scope, it makes for some great reading and it also passes as a good reference work. I recommend it.

Arnason goes into great detail for each art genre that existed during the 20th (and now 21st) century. It is a more engaging and explanative art history book than many others I have encountered. She writes in a fashion that is completely understandable yet very intelligent, rather than the strictly scholarly speak I have found in other volumes.

Nice overview of modern art. It's what I wanted. The particular copy I got was in good condition for an excellent price.

This is a pretty amazing treatment of the arts including photography and architecture from the late 19th century though the 20th to the early years of this century. It's not an easy read although well worth it. In addition to treatments of various works of art and artists the authors discuss their role inn the society of the time and in the larger scope of art.Janet Condino

this book by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux is refreshing. The funniest chapter was on "Knees." Too short of shorts with butt cheeks showing is considered vulgar. I jump to the conclusion too short of skirts worn with stilettos in the daytime would be considered by Madame Dariaux vulgar, too. I've made a few fashion gaffes in my lifetime, but not one exposing my butt cheeks during the day (or night) at work.I'm sure young ladies today might think this book is terribly outdated, but it's just what I needed to read. After having lost a substantial amount of weight through a lifestyle change in diet, I realized if I were called to an evening social event, I have nothing in my closet to wear that fits! I decided to seek out fashion ideas, and I stumbled across this book on Amazon. I found many of the comments intriguing, so I bought "A Guide to Elegance", read it -- and glad I did.With the advice in this book, I think I have found the perfect ensemble to wear if I need to go to a semi-formal evening event. Dariaux offers tips on color combinations, neck and hemlines, jewelry (both real and costume), and types and color of shoes to wear with what outfits. I found her advice extraordinarily helpful and enlightening. Keep in mind the author is discussing elegance and eschews following the latest fashion trends. Fashion trends and fads tend to detract from elegance.I learned a great deal from reading this book. I did not know the history of the wedge shoe. If you don't know, you'll be surprised to learn the where and why of the invention of this classless, shoe style.Granted the book was written in a past era. I am not acquainted with women today who have a vibrant social life of going out to events every evening. Most women I know are struggling to keep balance with both job/career and home life. I don't live in the city and go out to the country for week-long visits, so that part of the book was old-fashioned. But I did enjoy reading the contrast of what to wear in the city compared to the country, and what hour of the evening to wear what type of dress and so on.If you need to revisit what proper dress might be for any occasion, this book will help sort out the do's and don't's. It is a guide to elegance, which truly never goes out of style. What the world needs now is elegance.

This is absolutely precious. I purchased this for my guest bedroom and got my first stamp of approval from my house guest just last night! I read another book by Kathleen Tessaro called Elegance, which was based in part on this book. After reading some of the original content, I decided I had to have the original! While the advice given by Ms. Dariaux may seem rather dated at first, it does have a lot of common sense which never goes out of style. She is a true original.

I used to live in a country where Paris runway show videos were regularly part of prime time viewing! Women were very fashion conscious, and being bombarded I learned how to distinguish quality & style from passing fad. This book is a wonderful guide to that "something" that makes someone stand out even in today's atmosphere of bling, ka-Ching, and dah-ling. Ms. Dariaux's references can be a little quaint, & yes dated (but not without charm) and beyond most people's milieu - in giving wardrobe advice she refers to clients' selections in the very rarified haute couture house in which she was director. But it's these very glimpses on how people who know about quality, and who have the best to choose from, that will guide you in making confident, hell-to-high water wardrobe choices. Think timelessness, quality and über style. If you are into the latest anything, this book may not be for you, unless you wish to change. It appears everyone now wants to capture the refinement of "Grace, Audrey & Jackie"; this book is of that mindset. Ms. Dariaux charmingly & sensibly offers precise commentary & guidance towards this end. Interesting note: Ms. Dariaux doesn't mention money/budget/brands, but says 'buy the best you can afford, & good cut/silhouette/color over other considerations'. Spoken like a true haute couture insider. Not a long book; topics/apparel categories impeccably organized A to Z. Year after year this book has been an inspiration. Not surprising, I check out fashion publications often - this volume holds its own against newer style/fashion books - aptly titled.
