This will be short and sweet (like the book). I'm a 51 year old gay man and really didn't think I would be able to relate to the musings of a twenty-something gay man, but it turns out our life experiences are not so different (just the hairstyles we had while living them). The author made me think (an activity I generally avoid if at all possible) and had me laughing out loud. I can totally see this being a sitcom; I hope it happens. Now I have to try and track down the sitcom he currently works on, Awkward, and see if it's as fun as this book.

This book changed the way I thought about my life. I understand that's an absurd statement to make about a memoir but it really did. I found Ryan through Thought Catalog back in 2012 and fell in love with his writing. This book is the best of his best. He gives Millennials a voice to identify with but without all the condescension. He talks about how common it is for us to hate ourselves, and how self-destruction happens all the time, but it's not as glamorous as we try to make it look - he wants us to love ourselves in a way that has nothing to do with the internet. He's on the other side of self-sabotage and this book is his way of helping us get there. It's also hilarious.

This book is fantastic!!! I found it hilariously written. I was looking for a good book that I could get through easily (i.e. not overly complex writing) while I was traveling; just something to keep me entertained. This book took my expectations and blew them out of the water. I finished it much more quickly than I had planned, and I found myself audibly laughing in the airport. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone! I am particularly intrigued by Ryan's accurate distillations of millennial life. His ability to communicate and fortify his argument was thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining.

I really liked this book . I found myself in some parts of it even though I am not American and I don't live in New York or LA. This books talks about something else all we 20 something's year olds have in common and is how to find ourselves in this messy world, how to survive and how to accept ourselves for who we are and love all of the it, all of us, all of our experiences. Read it and see it by yourself. I'mVery glad I stumbled upon this book. I'm giving 4 stars just out of spite because I'm not yet in the place the author reached ... That lucky b****** :)

I've been a "fan" of Ryan's for a while now, but it's only now that I had the chance to read this book. Somehow I was expecting a recollection of a twenty something's wild/funny stories but it ended up being something more deep and relatable than that.

OK, first off, this book is freaking hilarious! I had never heard of Ryan O'Connell before seeing him mentioned in The Advocate but he's got a knack for self-deprecating humor. He knows how to poke fun at himself and the absurd situations which he (and many of us) have found ourselves in. And the good part is that you never feel guilty for laughing at the quirks that come along with cerebral palsy, because you know he's laughing along with you.So, the book is funny - if also a little short - so why not just give it 5 stars outright? Because while he's definitely good at opening up, there's nothing that I felt was new or incredibly unique about his writing (again, aside from the whole cerebral palsy stuff). The trails and tribulations he deals with are pretty similar to most gay adolescents trying to find themselves in a big city: drugs? Check. Messy hook-up? Check. Feeling insecure and not f$&k-able? Check. It's like reliving my 20's but with clever writing. In the end, the book is definitely entertaining and if you're looking for a quick, fun read, then I'd definitely recommend this book. But if you're looking for something that will give you some brand new insight into life that you'll remember six months from now, then I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

Ryan O'Connell's "I'm Special" is a hilarious read filled with honest and relatable(?) stories dealing with the gay man's struggle, drug addiction, cerebral palsy, living in New York, and a crippling fear of intimacy. Despite the superficial self-deprecating humor, Ryan keeps it real and conveys great life lessons all twentysomethings can learn from.I first heard about Ryan from my brother's then girlfriend 4 or 5 years ago. I wasn't a huge fan at first and thought his stuff was "too gay" for my taste. (Gosh, I was such a self loathing jerk.)Anyway, despite that, I kept reading his stuff on Thought Catalog and he eventually became the only writer I consistently kept up with. I love the way he takes these awful experiences and tells these great stories, even if it means embarrassing himself sometimes (all of the time). His articles and general social media presence helped me on my journey of self acceptance and taught me that I can be a big ol' gay mess and still be successful/happy.Fast forward to a few months ago and I immediately pre-ordered this book as soon as I heard about it. I quickly devoured it. To be honest, I was not expecting it to be as hilarious as it was, but I should have known better. Despite the lols from cover to cover, Ryan goes deep and presents this vulnerable, sweet side I had not seen publicly. It's kind of nice to see someone openly express those kind of scary thoughts we all share, because it takes so much courage to do so.This book reminded me that it's okay to be different and to just own it. Also, that I have to allow myself to be loved, but to love myself first. (He didn't really say that exactly, but I felt that general vibe, you know?)Apart from the great content, what makes this book even more special is that it's so beautifully constructed. It's not just a collection of random stories slapped together in random order. Each story flows so well into the next one and each story makes sense alone just as much as they all make sense together. The time and effort put into this book really shows. His professional journey has also inspired me and supercharged my drive to pursue a passion and go for my dream job. (Even if publishing is such a saturated, cut throat, and underpaid field, I believe I can do it 'cause you told me so, Ryan. [You didn't directly tell me so, but kind of.]) So thanks, Ryan, for telling us about the time you [redacted] on your boyfriend's [redacted]. It was truly an inspirational moment. Congrats, babe.
